Teamster Feeder Drivers Win Big Regarding Sunday Work
Local 710 Secures Over $138,000 in UPS Pay Claims Ahead of Holiday Season
MOKENA, IL | Teamsters Local 710 secured a monumental win for UPS Feeder Drivers. More than 150 pay claims were recently settled ahead of arbitration for more than $138,000 total back in the members’ pockets after the Company conceded to the Union regarding its position on Sunday work.
The 710 UPS contract is very well-defined when it comes to Sunday work, stating that drivers may sign up for extra work that will be assigned by seniority and paid at double time. The Company was violating the contract by allowing on-call drivers to take that Sunday work first and only pay them at straight time.
“This is another huge win for 710 members,” said Secretary-Treasurer Mike Cales. “Our UPS leadership team is incredibly knowledgeable and experienced, offering the strongest representation possible for our members to secure big victories like this regularly. I’m extremely proud of all the work that went into this case, and that we finished it just in time for the holidays.”
“We were fully prepared to take this through arbitration and prevail, but it’s great that the company came to their senses and recognized that they were in the wrong so we could finally put this to bed without the added time from arbitration,” said President Del Schaefer. “I’d like to thank Business Agents Matt Hamilton and Craig Friedrich, along with CACH Stewards Javier Sotello, Travis Breeden, Wally Kiska, and Todd Schilling for all of their hands-on fact checking during this process.”
This win was supported by a previous decision from 2022 where an arbitrator ruled in a case brought forth by a Feeder Driver out of Decatur that Sunday work that was not attached to a run would be run by seniority Feeder Drivers who sign up for extra work.
“Not only is this a great win for getting our members what they were owed from pay claims, but now the problem will finally be fixed moving forward,” said Friedrich. “It’s great that the company finally acknowledged the 2022 arbitration and paid our members what they were owed all along.”
“Our team did our homework and a lot of digging to determine every member that was violated by the Company’s mismanagement of the Sunday work,” said Hamilton. “This meant that the Local ensured our Drivers were rightfully compensated, even if the members didn’t catch it at first.”
Teamsters Local 710 represents more than 7,200 UPS members at 45 facilities throughout Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa.
