Teamsters, Community Come Together for Local 710 Member in Need
Hugely Successful Benefit Nets Nearly $20,000 in Donations for UPS Driver
Teamsters and community members recently turned out en masse to raise nearly $20,000 for Teamsters Local 710 member Mike Niemeier, who was badly burned in a very serious accident.
The charitable benefit took place in Evansville, Indiana. Niemeier is a 30-plus year UPS Driver working on Evansville’s west side and is well known throughout the entire community. Local 710 UPS members and supporters worked together to expertly organize and manage the event.
A cookout was planned in conjunction with a Mopar Car Club Cruise-In to collect donations and support Niemeier as he recovers at the Louisville Hospital Burn Unit.
“The outpouring of support for Mike is simply incredible,” said Del Schaefer, Local 710 UPS Business Agent for the Evansville facility. “Our UPS members worked very hard to organize this event, and they did a phenomenal job that will truly help Mike and his family through this difficult time.”
Everything for the event was donated, including all of the food and use of the space in the Stadium 16 Theatre parking lot. Nearly $14,000 was raised at the benefit alone, including a $1,000 donation from Local 710 and over $3,000 from entries to the car show. The Evansville UPS drivers had been working tirelessly prior to the event as well, collecting nearly $5,000 in donations from community residents and supporters.
