Local 710 Holds Second Successful, Interactive Stewards Training

UPS Stewards Training - June 6, Springfield
The second in a series of three Teamsters Local 710 Stewards Trainings took place this past Saturday at Teamsters Local 916 in Springfield, Ill. Local 916 graciously donated use of their space for 28 Local 710 UPS stewards to gather for seminars given by Joel Block of Goldberg Weisman Cairo, Jon Magna of Illinois Advocates, and Emma Rebhorn of Willig, Williams, and Davidson.
Interactive presentations covered included workers’ compensation, Duty of Fair Representation, grievance arbitration, harassment in the workplace, FMLA & ADA, social media, and Right-to-Work. Working with Local 710 UPS Business Agents, the presenters were able to tailor the training specific to the situations and issues occurring right in the stewards’ facilities across Illinois and Iowa.
“I’m a newer steward, so I thought it was important to attend the training, and I’m glad I did,” said Andrew McKeever, a UPS Steward out of the Peoria facility. “I thought it was very informative. I enjoyed the interaction we had with everyone there. It was good to hear how other stewards handle issues at their centers, and hearing that they’ve had some of the same issues as I’ve had was very reassuring. I’m glad [Local 710] will be doing more trainings in the future- I’m planning to go and encouraging my fellow stewards to go as well.”
Even more experienced stewards like Eli Hayes, a 5-year steward out of the UPS Decatur facility, found the training to be beneficial. “I thought the training was great as a whole, and it was very informative,” said Hayes. “Everything discussed touched base on the questions that arise from being a steward, so that was very helpful. It was even great to learn about some workplace issues that we as stewards might not handle directly, but can now know how to better talk about them with our members.”
The third Stewards Training will take place on Saturday, June 20 at the Local 710 Union Hall in Mokena, Ill. This training is open to all Local 710 stewards. For more information and to register for this training, please click here.
