Obituary
Mark R. Matthis, age 62. Longtime resident of Garfield Ridge, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025. Born and raised in the Bridgeport neighborhood, Mark later moved with his family to West Lawn, where he graduated from Hubbard High School. At age 15, he began working at the original Lindy’s Chili, mastering the art of making the best pot of chili around. Mark eventually discovered his passion in logistics and dedicated over 40 years to operating a semi tractor trailer, as a proud member of the Teamsters Local 705 and Local 710.
On a chilly fall night in October 1986, he met the love of his life Camille. They married on Valentine’s Day in 1989 and settled in Garfield Ridge, where they raised three wonderful children together.
Mark enjoyed fishing, spending time outdoors, and was especially passionate about cooking. Known as the life of the party, he was delighted in hosting gatherings with friends and family, always bringing his zest for life and infectious smile. Among his many joys, becoming a grandfather was his most cherished part of life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Camille Matthis (nee Orellana); his beloved children Courtney (Kevin) Schiller, Brittany Whitehead, and Mark (Vanessa) Matthis; and his treasured grandchildren —whom he affectionately called “his loves” — Aaliyah, Brynlee, Julian, and Bennett. Mark was also the proud father to his bonus son, Army SSG. and Police Officer Joseph Woodman. A dear son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend to many, Mark’s generous spirit touched everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his loving mother-in-law, the late Della Orellana, and his Goddaughter, Nicole Tandaric.
Mark will forever be remembered for his kindness, humor, and the love he gave so freely. Always willing to lend a helping hand, or his last dollar, he leaves behind a legacy of warmth and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
