Local 710 Settles UPS CACH Weather Delay Ahead of Arbitration
Teamsters Secure Over $27K Back to Drivers, Set Precedent Moving Forward
MOKENA, IL | On Thursday, Teamsters Local 710 successfully settled the UPS CACH “Weather Delay” grievances ahead of the scheduled arbitration, winning $27,629.18 paid back to the members affected through 87 grievances, and preventing the issue from happening in the future.
“This is a great win for our UPS Sleeper Teams,” said President Del Schaefer. “Our 710 UPS Negotiating Committee fought tooth and nail to get language into our 2023 contract to protect these drivers, and 710 was prepared to defend this case all the way through arbitration. Once again, the Company came to their senses, knowing that they couldn’t win this one in front of an arbitrator. Great work by our Business Agents Matt Hamilton and Craig Friedrich, along with our CACH Stewards who helped right this wrong.”
The issue started back in January of 2024 when UPS drivers were caught in a weather delay while on route and made it to a truck stop to wait out the delay in their cab. The Company believed that a truck stop was considered a suitable shelter, so they would deduct the first eight hours of pay while the driver was at the truck stop just as if they were in a hotel.
“This was a blatant violation of our contract,” said Business Agent Matt Hamilton. “Our language is very clear that delays of this nature are to be paid for all time spent while on the delay. I want to give a special ‘Thank You’ to CACH Stewards Javier Sotelo, Todd Schilling, and Travis Breeden for all their help to secure this win – regardless of what they had going on, they made it to every single local level grievance hearing to fight this issue on behalf of the members.”
